Josh Reddick has gone and started something by using George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” as his walk-up music. A’s fans have turned Reddick’s arrival at the plate, accompanied by Michael’s sax-heavy hit single, into a whole ritual involving swaying, dancing and playing fake saxophones.

And apparently there’s one fan with a real saxophone. It’s a good thing everyone in that section is totally stoned or the guy with the saxophone might get his instrument rammed into an orifice.
I’m sure Reddick had no idea what he was starting when he chose Michael’s tune as his walk-up song. He had no inkling that it would take off and become a whole phenomenon like “Sweet Caroline” at Fenway Park. He just wanted a nice mellow walk-up song full of sexy sax to get him in the right mood for facing pitchers. He didn’t want a pump-up song, he wanted a song that would get him into a nice calm, even frame-of-mind.
And now it’s an excuse for stoners to play fake saxophones and sway back and forth. As if they needed one.
