Report: New York Yankees release Brian Roberts
By Phil Watson
According to a report, the Brian Roberts experience is officially closed with the New York Yankees after the veteran infielder was released Saturday.
The oft-injured 36-year-old had been designated for assignment July 31 after signing with the Yankees in January.
Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reported via Twitter:
Roberts was a two-time All-Star with the Baltimore Orioles in the early 21st century, twice leading the American League in doubles (50 in 2004, 56 in 2009) and also paced the AL with 50 stolen bases in 2007.

But he hadn’t played more than 77 games in a season since 2009 with the Orioles due to a variety of ailments, including a herniated disc and a self-inflicted concussion (he hit himself in the head with his bat out of frustration) in 2010, a second concussion in 2011, a groin strain and hip surgery in 2012 and a ruptured tendon in his knee last season.
Injuries weren’t an issue for Roberts this season, but a lack of production was.
He hit just .237/.300/.360 in 91 games, scoring 40 runs with 16 doubles, four triples, five homers, 21 RBI and seven steals.
The Yankees designated Roberts for assignment after acquiring shortstop Stephen Drew from the Boston Red Sox on July 31 and have been using Drew extensively at second base since his arrival.
Roberts holds the Orioles’ single-season record with 56 doubles in 2009. He is third on the franchise’s all-time list with 278 stolen bases, fourth with 351 doubles and seventh with 810 runs.
