When the Ohio State Buckeyes kick off their 2014 season that they hope culminates with a Big Ten championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff, quarterback Braxton Miller is expected to be under center.

Returning for his fourth season as the team’s starting quarterback after bypassing the 2014 NFL Draft, of course Miller would be under center, right?

Well after offseason surgery on his shoulder there was some doubt whether the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year would be healthy enough to take on Navy in the team’s season opener.

Nturally, head coach Urban Meyer is going to be conservative with the health of the Heisman Trophy candidate and not rush him back, but Meyer spoke the status of Miller at Big Ten Media Days in July and offered some optimistic reports and echoed that after practice on Sunday.

“We’re being very cautious. He’s right on schedule,” Meyer told reporters on Sunday after practice. “If the game was tomorrow, we’d be very cautious with Braxton. But we have three weeks.”

Meyer has limited Miller in fall camp as he kept him from the team’s scrimmage on Saturday and had limited his throws during practice in an effort not to overdo it or risk a setback.

A healthy Miller can take the Buckeyes to a second straight Big Ten Championship Game and after missing some games earlier in his career, you have to be cautious, so Meyer is doing the wise thing with his quarterback.

The goal is not to have Miller ready for August 11, but rather have him ready for August 30 and for the next five months.

Miller threw for 2,094 yards and 24 touchdowns last season as a junior and added 1,068 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
