The announcement came via Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday.

In a statement released shortly after the announcement, Crystal Dynamics gave a bit of insight into why this decision was made.

“Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming,” the statement reads. “Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011.”

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the rebooted franchise that is showing the origins of Lara Croft as the fabled Tomb Raider. Not much else is known regarding the upcoming title other than the release window, which is currently slated for Holiday 2015.

Mike’s Musings: Now this is what you call a major get by Microsoft. I don’t know exactly how many consoles this will help sell, but to get Rise of the Tomb Raider as an exclusive to Xbox One has to be a move that the company believes will help the system catch up to Sony’s PlayStation 4. A big selling point for game consoles are the exclusives, and this could be one of the bigger ones for the early portion of generation four.
