Ron Jaworksi: Cardinals’ Logan Thomas best rookie QB so far
Not Jaguars’ Blake Bortles. Not Browns’ Johnny Manziel. Not Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo. ESPN’s Ron Jaworksi thinks that Cardinals’ rookie quarterback Logan Thomas has been the best thus far.
The aforementioned list of quarterbacks were all selected above Thomas, a former Virginia Tech Hokie. At times, he was considered a top — at one point, the top — college quarterback prospect. Due to accuracy issues and a poor offense at Virginia Tech, his stock plummeted. The strong-armed, athletic prospect was suddenly considered a possible NFL tight end.
He’s making a case against the positional switch. In his first preseason game as an NFL quarterback, he completed 11-of-12 for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The problem with Jaws’ assessment in that he’s not considering context. Other rookies arrived at earlier parts of the game, playing against first- and second-team players. Thomas went out in the second half of the first preseason game and dominated. That might be the most meaningless game action all year — so cool your jets and don’t go picking him up in your dynasty leagues. Let the youngster play a few more games and prove himself.
After all, he could just be another preseason standout. Remember Colt Brennan? He was a preseason stud for the Washington Redskins and now he’s out of the league. Logan Thomas isn’t at the preseason-wonder level, but I’m not willing to concede that he was better than Bortles.
Thomas has a good preseason game. Take it at that.
