Carolina Panthers fans are concerned about the health of starting quarterback Cam Newton, after having surgery in the offseason to tighten the ligaments in his ankle in March. Newton was held out of the first preseason game, so playing against the Kansas City Chiefs in the second preseason game would be his preseason debut, and head coach Ron Rivera said he would play at least a quarter.

From the Charlotte Observer:

"Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton would play at least the first quarter of Sunday night’s nationally televised exhibition against Kansas City. Rivera has said previously Newton would not run the zone read against the Chiefs."

It is important for Newton to get some time in working with his team after some turnover on offense, particularly at the wide receiver position. Rivera wants to be cautious with Newton though, and not put him at further risk.

“We’ll see,” Rivera said. “Right now the initial plan is to get him into the first quarter and then go from there.”
