In a Sportsnation poll that asked, Who will be the Browns’ starting quarterback in Week 1?” 64 percent of Americans say that Brian Hoyer will start week one. 21,314 people have been polled so far and even 72 percent of Ohio thinks that Johnny Manziel won’t get the start week one.
The preseason battle between Hoyer and Manziel has only seen one game so far, but it has been pretty even. Hoyer finished six for 14 and 92 yards passing against Detroit Aug. 9 and Manziel finished seven for 11 with 63 yards and 27 yards rushing.
Johnny Manziel, or “Johnny Football”, was drafted 22nd overall by the Cleveland Browns and was the second quarterback taken in the draft. Manziel won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman for the Texas A&M Aggies when he recorded 47 total touchdowns on 3,706 passing yards and 1,410 rushing yards. In his sophomore year, Manziel showed better throwing stats when he threw for 4,114 yards and 37 touchdowns as well as nine rushing touchdowns.
On the other end of the spectrum, Brown quarterback Brian Hoyer went un-drafted from Michigan State in 2009. In just three games started for Cleveland last year, Hoyer won all three games. Cleveland only won four games on the season.
As of right now, Hoyer is the started and it seems that Cleveland fans want that. Manziel has brought his, “You love me or you hate me attitude” into the NFL and it doesn’t seem to be working its magic that well, yet. If Manziel proves himself to be better over Hoyer in the next three preseason games, he could very well get the ball in week one.
