His drunken-Frankenstein-like lack of speed was on display Sunday when he attempted to exploit an opening in the San Francisco 49ers defense by scrambling for a touchdown.
After the initial āburst,ā Peytonās creaky old body remembers that it canāt run and easily gets tackled. Manning is so amazingly slow that it actually fools the camera man.
Normally, professional camera operators only get fooled by great play fakes or amazingly fast runners. You seldom see them get thrown off by pure slowness. Peytonās almost otherworldly lack of speed took this particular camera man totally by surprise.

Peyton spoke after the game about that play and how disconcerting it was for him to realize his own slowness (via Shutdown Corner):
"āI thought I was going to score, but I got one yard,ā Manning said, showing off his comedic skills. āKind of humbling.āManning is always good for a self-deprecating joke, and he had one when asked if his run was planned.āYeah, itās a tendency breaker,ā Manning said. āYou try to catch them off guard. Itās probably not really high on their alert game plan sheet, āWatch for the quarterback run.'ā"
The play may have fooled the defense but they had plenty of time to adjust to the lumbering mass of helmeted humanity moving toward them in dreamy slow motion. Only the camera man really got fooled by that one.
