By Josh Hill
The Detroit Pistons don’t know what they want to do with Greg Monroe as he remains a restricted free agent who doesn’t want to sign with the only team who controls his future at the moment.

It has been speculated that the reason there has been no offer sheets delivered to Monroe yet is because every team knows that whatever is offered will be matched by the Pistons, making said initial offer nothing more than the Pistons dirty work from a negotiating stand point.
According to Michael Lee of The Washington Post, there is limited leverage for Greg Monroe to utilize but the Pistons big man is doing his best to make sure he’s as in control of his largely uncontrollable situation as possible.
"Even if he desired to sign elsewhere this summer, Monroe would essentially be setting the contract terms for the Pistons to match and tie him up for the next four years. The only leverage Monroe possesses is to take the qualifying offer and take control of his own destiny next year without the restrictions he faces now."
Monroe has to be applause for wanting to control his own future in a situation where that’s hard to do but he’s managing as best he can. If he signs with the Pistons then it will be for the short term which is very risky in the NBA these days but it could pay off in the end with Monroe getting to choose his next playing destination which is a freedom not every NBA player gets.
