The Phoenix Suns had an amazing season last year and were the best team in the NBA that missed the playoffs, as they narrowly missed on a chance to go to the postseason in a year where they were projected to be terrible.

But now that the team is starting to fire on all cylinders, the matter of paying the core group of players that are making them the special team that they are is coming u and it’s going to complicate matters moving forward. The Suns are already locked in a dispute with Eric Bledsoe and a number of contracts with their core players will be expiring next season.

According to Steve Kyler from Basketball Insiders, the Suns indeed have a special team but none of their players are worth a max contract — not even Bledsoe — and Phoenix isn’t in the wrong for holding out on overpaying to keep the core intact.

"The question becomes what is each guy worth… None of them are MAX guys – of the bunch maybe Dragic gets a huge deal, but let’s say realistically, they are all $12 million guys as an average… that’s still $48 million.Bledsoe, if he’s smart, takes the Suns $12 million per offer. Gerald Green signs a multi-year deal in the $8-$9 million range in a heartbeat, so we’re back to Dragic, who just turned 28, so he’s maybe worth a big money deal, but even then are you going more than $12 million?"

Kyler isn’t wrong but that doesn’t mean the players involved won’t be asking for as much money as they can get. That’s just how things work in the NBA and it’s likely why the Suns and Bledsoe are at odds with one another at the moment. Phoenix will figure it all out but this is a classic case of a team that has something going for it getting side tracked thanks to agents trying to get as much or even too much for their clients when they’re stock is at its highest.
