Ahead of their Premier League return, Redknapp has been keen to add big names to his Queen’s Park Rangers side, with Rio Ferdinand being the most notable arrival of the summer. Gascogine, capped 57 times by England, has been offered the chance to coach youth team players at the club and even offered to travel with the Newcastle United legend.
Speaking with BBC, Redknapp stated:
"“If he wants to do it I would pick him up every morning at 0545 at the end of his road and bring him in.”"
Pictures recently surfaced in a number of media outlets which showed Gascoigne looking gaunt and unhealthy amidst allegations that the 47 year-old may have started drinking alcohol again. Reports also suggested that ‘Gazza’ was hospitalised and on the verge of homelessness.
While recently in the newspapers for the wrong reasons, Gascoigne’s talents on the field are undeniable, which is usually best indicated by his unbelievable goal against Scotland in 1996.
Redknapp reaffirmed his admiration for Gascoigne, and offered the former Rangers player his full support.
"“He is a great lad and it is just sad to see how he is looking at the moment. I saw him about a month ago and I said ‘I will pick you up in the mornings Gazza, come training with me. Do a little bit of work with the kids’,” Redknapp stated, “I would love it if he would do that, that is an open invitation to him.”“I see Gazza around and I love Gazza, he has got a heart of gold. He has probably given his last penny away but that is just how he is. Everyone has tried to help him but the only person who can help him now is himself – everyone has tried.”"
It is unknown whether Gascoigne will accept Redknapp’s offer, which the QPR manager describes as an ‘open invitation’.
