Although he was owed less than $1 million for the 2014-2015 seasons and has been the best value in basketball, the Houston Rockets decided to decline the option on Parsons’ contract and make him a restricted free agent. It seemed like a forgone conclusion the Rockets would eventually re-sign Parsons. However, the Dallas Mavericks signed him to a three-year, $46 million offer sheet and the Rockets chose not to match the deal, instead signing Washington Wizards’ free agent swingman Trevor Ariza.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Some believe Parsons was overpaid but Larry Coon of Basketball Insiders believes Parsons could be a “value contract.”

"No, I think Cuban read the situation — both with the Rockets and with future revenue and cap projections in mind, and decided that he had a good shot at keeping Parsons, and if he did get him, that it’d be a value contract in the long run."

With star forward Dirk Nowitzki giving Cuban and the Mavericks a huge discount, signing Parsons really wasn’t much of a risk.

Parsons averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from the field, 37.0% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free throw line last season. The postseason may be why Parsons made his money. He went for 19.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field, 36.1% from three and 73.3% from the foul line.  In his three-year career, the former Florida Gator has put up 14.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field, 37.0% from three and 70.5% from the chairty stripe.
