Michael Vick wanted to be a starting quarterback this season. He was probably never going to be a starting quarterback this season.

In the time since he has joined the New York Jets, Vick has held the number two spot behind Geno Smith from day one. That never really changed, and on Friday night Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan confirmed that will officially be the case when the 2014 season opens in less than two weeks.
According to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com:
"Ryan announced Friday that Geno Smith would be the team’s Week 1 starter, making official what had long been obvious……”(Geno) has done everything that we have asked,” Ryan said. “And again this is no slight to Mike Vick. Because believe me like I said, I wanted to come out of this knowing that we have two really good quarterbacks and we think we can win games with. And in my heart I feel that we have two that we can win with.”"
With this decision in the books, it will only temporarily bring peace and quiet to the situation if Smith struggles out of the gate. While the West Virginia product had flashes of brilliance last season, he was mostly inconsistent and will need to be steadier in his sophomore campaign.
As for Vick, the question now becomes whether or not the Jets will use him in ‘Wildcat’ packages or if he will stick to being a true backup. For a team that has struggled offensively for the last number of seasons, that is a situation worth monitoring.
