St. Louis Rams rumors: Kirk Cousins a trade target?

The St. Louis Rams find themselves in search of options for a starting quarterback after the news on Sunday that Sam Bradford will be out for the season with a torn ACL.

With head coach Jeff Fisher acknowledging that the team will consider trades as a means to acquire a starter other than Shaun Hill, it is only natural that the Rams would then be linked to the quarterback whose name has been a fixture in trade rumors over the last year or so.

That quarterback, of course, would be Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins. Less than a day after Bradford’s injury, and the “Cousins to the Rams” rumors are already swirling.

Rich Tandler of CSN Washington writes the following:

"Cousins could be attractive to the Rams for a number of reasons. He is 26, has flashed some ability since the Redskins drafted him in 2012, and is under contract at minimum salaries through 2016. Despite the preseason struggles of Robert Griffin III, he probably does not have a long-term future in Washington. The Rams could bring him in, get him up to speed on the offense, start him when he’s ready (they have a Week 4 bye, perfect for making the transition) and then give him a year-plus trial as their QB."

There is no shortage of irony in these grumblings, of course, as the Rams are responsible for trading the pick to Washingtonto select their current starting quarterback in Robert Griffin III. There would an odd, depressing sort of reciprocity at play here if this were to play itself out.

It is easy to look at the Rams’ situation without Bradford and say they should make a trade. What is more challenging is to actually suggest a real trade that would make sense. A deal for Cousins might actually be one such trade, which means this rumor will only gain steam in the coming days.
