The New England Patriots are expected to make some roster moves today as teams begin to clear out the clutter and trim the fat for the upcoming season.

More from Houston Texans

One player the league is keeping an eye on is backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, who is not expected to win the backup role behind Tom Brady but is expected to garner some interest on the open market if he’s released today as part of the Patriots’ final cuts.

According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, should the Patriots release Mallett then the Houston Texans will claim him off of waivers.

The Texans have had eyes on Mallett since the NFL Draft when there were hot and heavy rumors about a trade possibly going down. But there were not trades made and it’s now looking like either the Patriots will cut Mallett and let the Texans take it from there or keep him on roster to serve as a trade chip at some point during the season.
