The FIBA World Cup is tipping off on Saturday in Spain and that means the host county will be getting the final game of the schedule against Iran — who deserve a small trophy for simply showing up for the matchup.

That isn’t to rip on the Iranians for participating, but the team features no professional players from the NBA while the Spanish roster reads like an All-Star reserve squad of high end NBA talent. From the Gasol brothers to Serge Ibaka to Ricky Rubio, there’s no telling how far Spain can get in the World Cup but chances are it will be a lot farther than Iran.
Let’s not discount the Iranians, as we’ve seen upsets in the past but the chances that the happens is rather low. Don’t count it out but it’s not the most likely outcome that we should expect to see one game into group play for the FIBA World Cup.
