Despite being at the end of his career — in his last season, in fact — there was significant interest on the market for Dunn. But only the Athletics were willing to pay for Dunn’s services as Buster Olney from ESPN reports that Oakland absorbing as much as $1 million of Dunn’s remaining salary from Chicago was the key selling point in the trade.
Susan Slusser originally reported that the A’s would be taking on $1 million of Dunn’s salary.
It’s a move of desperation by the A’s, who are fading as favorites in the American League and need something to happen quick. The turnaround won’t be easy but something needs to happen and Oakland knew that before they acquired Dunn.
