After signing forward LeBron James and trading for power forward Kevin Love, the Cleveland Cavaliers have assembled arguably the best, or at least most talented, team in the NBA. They join a core that already includes All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, guard Dion Waiters and big man Tristan Thompson. Many believe those five could round out the starting five.

Many believe the Cavaliers would be better suited with a bigger defensive presence than Thompson and there has been speculation the Cavaliers will trade him rather than try to extend him.

However, Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio believes Thompson could still sign an extension provided he adjusts to playing with Love.

"As for your question about Tristan signing an extension at season’s end … I think this season will determine that. It’s a big year for him. He has to re-do his entire role now that Love is in Cleveland. How Tristan handles it will determine, in my opinion, his long-term future with the team."

That would mean Thompson would have to become more of a rim-protector while Love, James, Irving and to a lesser extent, Waiters, carry the scoring load. It would likely mean sacrificing some individual numbers, which could hurt Thompson if he does wind up becoming a free agent.

Thompson, still just 23 years old, averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 69.3% from the free throw line. He was originally selected by the Cavaliers with the fourth-overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. In his three-year career, he’s put up 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 63.0% from the free throw line.
