Now that the San Antonio Spurs have emerged as candidates to sign free agent Ray Allen, ESPN’s Nick Borges points out (via HoopsRumors.com) that the Spurs may be the best landing spot for the sharp shooter because the team can still offer the $5.3 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception where as the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks can only offer the veteran minimum.

ESPN’s March Stein reported that the Spurs are trying to get in on the action.

"ESPN.com has learned that the Spurs are trying to barge their way into the race to sign Allen … which first, of course, requires one of the 39-year-old’s suitors to persuade him to play next season."

While money may not be the top priority on Allen’s mind, the Spurs offer a real chance to compete for an NBA title and throw a few million more dollars his way.

With the Heat last season, Allen had to bear some of the scoring load a little more than he was probably expecting. With Dwyane Wade missing games and the rest of the role players not stepping up, Allen often found himself handling the ball and trying to create his own shots. If Allen is looking for a comfortable spot where he can be a spot-up shooter, San Antonio is the place.

Allen had a first-hand look at how well the Spurs move the ball to create open looks and make stars out of the likes of Danny Green and Patty Mills. Jesus Shuttlesworth must know he can make it rain in that system.

Allen is expected to make a decision on whether or not he will play by the time NBA training camps start at the end of September. If he decides to return for another season, the Spurs should be a top contender.
