Matt Cassel may feel rookie QB Teddy Bridgwater breathing down his neck, but Vikings coach Mike Zimmer says there is no need for Cassel to worry.

More from Minnesota Vikings

Zimmer said during his Wednesday press conference that even though he knows fans are excited to see Bridgewater, he doesn’t plan to have a quick hook with Cassel.

There’s a reason the Vikings chose Cassel to be their opening day starter over Bridgewater, and Zimmer said it’s all about experience:

But what happens if Cassel struggles against the Rams and the Teddy Bridgewater chorus starts rising in Minnesota?

Obviously, Zimmer is not worried about what the fans think. He is only worried about what his offensive coordinator Norv Turner thinks. And his general manager Rick Spielman.

That brain trust will make the call on when it’s time to send Matt Cassel to the showers and bring in Teddy Bridgewater.

Though the rookie looked good in his preseason appearances, the Vikings are feeling no pressure to begin the Teddy Bridgewater era. They brought back Matt Cassel for a reason.

For the time being, this is Matt Cassel’s team. And Mike Zimmer has made it clear that Cassel has no reason to fear for his job.

Viking fans should know that they will need plenty of patience when it comes to Bridgewater. There’s a strong possibility that Bridgewater won’t see any action at all this year, and you get the sense this would be just fine with the Vikings.
