According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have fired general manager Kevin Towers which could be the first of a slew of firings in Arizona this fall and winter.
"As the team stumbles toward the end of a disappointing season, the Diamondbacks have fired Kevin Towers as the club’s general manager, according to sources. The team is expected to make the announcement Friday morning."
Towers was on the hot seat in Arizona along with manager Kirk Gibson but now only one of those two men are still employed — and probably not for much longer. Not long ago Gibson was reportedly not going to be fired at the end of the season but that is likely all getting thrown out the window now.
What the dismissal of Towers means for Gibson is that a new general manager will more than likely want to bring in his own guy, meaning Gibson is going to be out. He was on the bubble to begin with but is now looking at the possibility of twisting in the wind before getting fired by whoever succeeds Towers as GM.
