Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been a constant in trade rumors over the years, so it wasn’t exactly surprising to hear ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan report this week that Rondo had told the Celtics he wanted to be traded.

But it turns out MacMullan’s report is either untrue or Boston simply didn’t want that information going public because team president Rich Gotham said the following on Friday.

It’s hard to tell what the truth is here, given the strong denial. But it’s worth noting that MacMullan is one of the most trustworthy basketball reporters today and is rarely wrong.

Regardless, the fact of the matter is that it’s absolutely conceivable for Rondo to get traded from the Celtics sometime in the near future.

Rondo is one of the better point guards in the NBA and likely has little interest in remaining with a team that’s in the midst of a rebuild.

What could be standing in the way of a move is that possible trade partners would need a commitment from Rondo that he would stay with the team long-term before seriously pursuing a move.

Rondo averaged 11.7 points, 9.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game this past season.
