The Toronto Blue Jays were one of the biggest stories of the first half of the 2014 season. Things have gradually fizzled, and now one of their best players will be out for the remainder of the season.

Outfielder Melky Cabrera fractured his right pinkie this week. On Friday the team announced that he will be out for the season. According to Ben Chisholm of MLB.com:
"The 30-year-old was sent for an X-ray, which revealed the fracture. Surgery will be required to fix an “evulsion of the extensor tendon,” according to a Blue Jays spokesman. It wasn’t immediately clear what time frame Cabrera will need to recover, but his season is officially over. He will undergo the surgical procedure next week, and considering Cabrera will hit free agency at the end of the season, it’s possible he has played his last game in a Blue Jays uniform."
Cabrera’s final 2014 numbers are nothing short of outstanding: in 138 games he batted .300/.348/.457 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI. A free agent at season’s end, Cabrera has set himself up for a nice payday with the Blue Jays or some other interested team.
Dating back to 2011, Cabrera’s offensive production has been outstanding. That stretch was briefly interrupted by a PED suspension, but brief is the best word to describe it. The effects of that suspension did not last, clearly, as Cabrera will get paid this winter.
