While the baseball world focuses on New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter and his final regular season games in the big leagues, there is another farewell tour happening in Chicago. Longtime White Sox first baseman/designated hitter Paul Konerko will retire at season’s end; he is also going through a farewell tour, albeit a more understated one.

More from Chicago White Sox

Unfortunately for Konerko, he might see his final season cut short by an injury. On Friday the team announced that Konerko will be out for at least a week with a fractured hand. According to Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune:

"White Sox captain Paul Konerko has fractured the sesamoid bone on the outside of his left hand and will miss at least a week, if not more, Sox manager Robin Ventura said Friday……Ventura said that Konerko thinks he injured his hand on a tag play at first base against the Twins on Tuesday.“We’ll see when we get back home, how he feels from there, but I don’t see him playing in this series (against the Indians),” Ventura said. “He’s not real happy about it. It’s unfortunate. He just noticed it yesterday, walking around, it wasn’t feeling very good, and he wanted to get it checked out.”"

In his final season, Konerko is batting just .220/.272/.344 with five home runs and 22 RBI. With less than three weeks of action left this season, the unfortunate reality is that it is hard to envision Konerko playing again before the year is done.

For his career Konerko is a .279 hitter with 439 home runs. He has been with the White Sox since 1999.
