The Tigers played the first half without starting quarterback Nick Marshall – Marshall was suspended because of an arrest for marijuana possession during the offseason. Without Marshall, the Tigers had some success on offense, but the game was tied at 21 at the half, which certainly seemed like a cause concern for the Tigers’ defense. However, in the second half, the Tigers shut the Razorbacks out, outscoring them 24-0 en route to a 45-21 victory.
Jeremy Johnson, who filled in for Marshall, started 12-of-16 for 243 yards and two touchdowns but he made way for Marshall in the second half. Marshall completed four-of-six passes for 50 yards and rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. The Tigers got 177 yards and a touchdown from running back Cameron Artis-Payne, their replacement for Tre Mason. Wide receiver D’haquille Williams, a junior college transfer, could be the Tigers’ next star – he made nine catches for 154 yards and a touchdown in his debut.
The Spartans, who are replacing a fantastic quarterback in David Fales, defeated North Dakota 42-10 last week. Fales’ heir, quarterback Blake Jurich, was excellent, completing 22-of-25 passes for 250 yards with three touchdowns.
The Tigers are favored by 34.
