Major League Baseball is a game that is always acutely aware of its long and rich history. How well it does in honoring that history wavers, however, depending on the player, figure, or moment in question.

More from Los Angeles Dodgers

There is one case at the present moment, however, where baseball continues to show the appropriate amount of respect and recognition for somebody who has made meaningful contributions to the game and its history for such a long time.

That case would be Los Angeles Dodgers’ play-by-play announcer Vin Scully. He is looked upon in the highest regards and is the recipient of well-deserved honors for all that he has done for baseball over the course of his long career.

The most recent example came this week, as Scully received the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award from Bud Selig.

From Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, Selig had the following to say about Scully and the award:

"“I thank him for a lifetime of extraordinary service to the Dodgers franchise,” Selig said. “There’s never been anyone better behind the mic. Hearing his voice makes me feel better. He’s chronicled history, and now he’s part of that history. From Koufax to Kershaw, he’s represented the game beautifully.“I think back on his career and everything he’s done and seen. For somebody who grew up listening to the radio, that was my bond with baseball for many years. You have no idea what a privilege this is.”"

Once again Scully announced that he will be back for another season in 2015, and once again that is outstanding news. Baseball is better for having Scully, age 86, still be a part of it.
