Up against the Carolina Panthers whom were responsible for fielding the second best defense in the league in 2013 and the league’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Luke Kuechly, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have failed to generate an offense and their quarterback is doing them no help.
With a minute left until halftime as the Bucs attempted to drive the ball down the field, Luke McCown managed to fumble the snap and recover the ball, only to throw an awful interception to defensive back Roman Harper on the Bucs side of the field.
These are the kind of plays you expect from an inexperienced quarterback, not a 12-year veteran coming off a season where he threw for 1829 yards and 13 touchdowns to 1 interceptions in 12 games.
In fact, McCown has already doubled his interception total from the previous total, having thrown two prior to halftime. Outside of the two interceptions, McCown is responsible for 11 completions on 19 attempts for 85 yards, 3 sacks, and a quarterback rating of 29.4.
Being paid $10 million this year ($5 million the next), McCown is going to have to drastically improve his place if Lovie Smith’s Buccaneers want to make a dent in the ultra-competitive NFC South.
McCown’s play as of now could be an anomaly as he won’t be facing the Panthers’ defense every week, but if he can’t improve, Smith will have to look elsewhere to salvage his season.
