The Carolina Panthers were likely trying to ‘Ostrich Effect’ the Cam Newton rib injury as they were hoping that if they just ignored it or didn’t talk about it, the injury would go away. Carolina still isn’t officially talking about the injury to Newton but it’s very much not going away to the point where this week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might not be the only one the quarterback misses.

More from Carolina Panthers

For full disclosure, the Panthers have not yet ruled Newton out, but multiple reports from Jay Glazer to Mike Garafolo are stating that Newton is unlikely to play in Week 1. Now the injury seems to be getting more serious by the minute as Mike Florio passes along — via Glazer — the injury could keep Newton out 3-4 weeks.

"Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Panthers fear a shot to the injured area could knock Newton out for three to four weeks.Glazer says the door remains open for Newton to persuade the Panthers that he can protect himself against a hit that could extend his absence beyond this week."

Newton being out that long could derail the Panthers season before it even starts, which is something that fans aren’t looking forward to seeing after last year. But just like last year, there’s a chance the Panthers can will their way through this and find a way to overcome an injury that the Panthers now officially have to deal with.
