Sterling Shepard had a career high 177 yards on eight catches in Oklahoma’s romp of Tulsa. Trevor Knight threw for 299 yards, and ran for 35 more while accounting for three touchdowns. The Oklahoma offense was firing on all cylinders Saturday, and the defense was just as impressive. If the Sooners can manage to stay out of their own way, this could be a magical season. Our defense hasn’t been this good in about a decade.
Nebraska has never lost to a 1-AA team. That nearly changed on Saturday. They needed a miracle 58 yard touchdown reception by Ameer Abdullah to pull of a 31-24 win over McNeese State. The offense looked stale without receivers Kenny Bell and Jamal Turner. The Cornhusker line got pushed around some by the Cowboys, and they did a great job on Abdullah. He had only 54 yards on 17 carries. The Nebraska defense had some serious problems with Kansas State transfer Daniel Sams. If he could throw accurately, he would be a very good quarterback.
I was really impressed by UTSA’s defense. They harassed Arizona’s true freshman QB Anu Solomon, and held him to roughly half of his offensive output from the first game. Moral victories still mean something to the Roadrunners, but once Conference USA play starts, they won’t need them anymore. With East Carolina now in the AAC, I would not be a bit surprised if UTSA won CUSA.
Washington State’s defense wasn’t the problem on Friday, it was the offense. Nevada’s defense stepped up, and held the Cougars to just 13 points. That was the lowest total for the Cougars since week 2 of last year against USC when they scored just ten points. The good news? They held USC to seven…..
James Connor gashed Boston College for 214 yards rushing on Friday. He seems to be the next in a long line of great Pitt running backs.
Apparently Mother Nature felt sorry for Florida Atlantic. The last eight minutes of the game were called with Alabama leading 41-0. There is a good chance that the Owls wouldn’t even crack the FCS top 25…….
You know, it’s one thing to get thrashed by Baylor. It’s something else to get trampled by North Texas. It could be a very very long year for June Jones in Dallas……
College GameDay is on the NDSU bandwagon. For the second straight year, they are going to Fargo. Hey, it’s about time they get some notoriety. Kansas State was kept under control for much of the game by the same Iowa State team that just lost to the Bison. You can see improvement on the horizon for the Cyclones. Sam Richardson had one of his best games. Jarvis West and Allen Lazard are big playmakers already. Now if they could only find a running back…..
Oklahoma State transfer Wes Lunt led Illinois to 21 fourth quarter points in a come from behind win over Western Kentucky. Purdue got smoked by Central Michigan. We all know what almost happened in Lincoln. It was a rough early day for some of the Big 10(14), and it didn’t get any better as the day wore on. And you wonder why a lot of people don’t take this conference seriously…..
After thumping Vanderbilt in Nashville, Temple gave a pretty good Navy team all they could handle. The Owls are a sleeper candidate for a MAC title. Oh, and Temple is the best team with an owl for a mascot…….
