The win was the first in almost a year for the Texans, who lost the final 14 games of last season. Washington has now lost nine in a row after dropping its last eight a year ago.
Darrel Young scored first for the Redskins, getting into the end zone on a 1-yard run with 6:06 left in the first half, but J.J. Watt blocked Kai Forbath’s extra point attempt and Washington led 6-0.
The lead was very short-lived.
After a holding penalty on the kickoff, the Texans started the drive at their own 11. Arian Foster ran three times, picking up a first down, before Ryan Fitzpatrick found DeAndre Hawkins deep down the right side for a 76-yard touchdown and a 7-6 lead.
Houston scored again on Washington‘s next drive. After holding the Redskins to a three-and-out, reserve running back Alfred Blue broke through the line and blocked Tress Way’s punt, picking up the ball at the 5-yard line and ambling into the end zone untouched for a 14-6 lead.
Houston got the only points of the second half on Randy Bullock’s 42-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining.
Robert Griffin III, starting at quarterback for the first time since Week 14 last season, was 29-for-37 for 267 yards, settling for a lot of short gains and completing only two passes for more than 20 yards.
He was also sacked three times for 26 yards, including this loss of 12 on a sack credited to Houston’s Brooks Reed.
Fitzpatrick, in his first game for Houston, was an efficient 14-for-22 for 206 yards and a touchdown. Foster finished with 103 yards on 27 carries.
Alfred Morris ran 14 times for 91 yards for the Redskins. Griffin ran only three times for two yards.
Watt, who just signed a $100 million contract extension, was active with three tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, a pass deflection and five hits on Griffin, along with the blocked extra point.
