What was that murmur you sensed in the football universe during the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers?

I’m glad you asked: that murmur was fantasy football owners everywhere congratulating themselves and bragging to their buddies about the fact that they drafted Cardinals’ wide receiver Michael Floyd for their team. Early on in this game, Floyd got loose against an admittedly shaky San Diego Chargers’ secondary for a 63-yard catch-and-run.
As far as explosiveness and even in terms of usage in the current iteration of the Cardinals’ offensive system, one might argue that Floyd is in the process of taking over for Larry Fitzgerald as the number one wide receiver in Arizona. That is not true in terms of their track records, of course, nor is it the case with their salaries: Fitzgerald carries an $8.6 million cap figure this year, while Floyd’s figure is only $2.7 million.
Fitzgerald is still the top dog, but as Floyd showed here, he might not be far behind. If nothing else, the frighteningly inconsistent Carson Palmer will have weapons to work with this season in Arizona.
