Ellerbe had played at middle linebacker last year, however, he was moved to strong side linebacker this year. That allowed Phillip Wheeler to move to the weak side and Kao Misi moved to the middle. The Dolphins believe it would lead to a more intimidating front. Unfortunately, Wheeler was inactive during Sunday’s game. And Misi was sidelined with an ankle injury.
Kelvin Sheppard figures to play strong side linebacker for the Phins. The 25 year old appeared in 15 games last season with the Colts before getting waived following the preseason. The Dolphins could designate Ellerbe for return IR, which would allow him the possibility for a return in eight weeks, if healthy.
Despite those injuries, the Dolphins innovative 5-2 from was highly effective. Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon acted as stand up linebackers as opposed to defensive ends.
