With Derek Jeter day behind them and number 2 patches on their caps and jerseys, the New York Yankees are now looking to make a miraculous run to the 2014 playoffs. In order to do so, however, they might have to continue trying to win games without one of their better players in the lineup.

Outfielder Brett Gardner is dealing with a lower abdominal sprain, and he does not feel like the injury is improving. With that in mind, the Yankees are not sure when he will return to the lineup.

From Erik Boland of Newsday:

"Gardner has missed two straight games with what he believes is a “lower abdominal strain,” though no tests had been done as of Sunday morning. Most concerning, from the Yankees’ perspective, is Gardner’s description of what he’s feeling and the possibility of it getting aggravated if he plays too soon. “Not exactly sure what it is, but just the way it feels, it feels like it could [get worse],” he said. “I just don’t know what to expect at this point.”"

The Yankees have to play nearly perfect baseball from here to the end of the season to have any hopes of making the playoffs. It won’t help those efforts to be without Gardner.

Through 133 games, Gardner is batting .269/.342/.442 with 16 home runs, 56 RBI, and 19 stolen bases.
