The no. 1 overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft, Houston Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, went down with a knee injury in the season-opening week against the Washington Redskins on Sunday, and the news is not good. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Clowney underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee Monday morning, and head coach Bill O’Brien has confirmed that hit star player will be out for 4-6 weeks of action going forward.

More from Houston Texans

Clowney, the no. 1 overall pick out of South Carolina, came out of the game after he was rushing after QB Robert Griffin III and came down awkwardly on the knee. Initially on Sunday, it was reported that the Texans feared that Clowney would be out for the amount of time that he will be, and they were correct.

Unfortunately, the injury could have happened because of an issue with the field in Houston. According to Albert Breer of NFL.com, Clowney explained to teammate D.J. Swearinger that he believes the injury occurred by stepping into an opening on the field.

"‘He told me on the field when it happened, he was just like, ‘Bro, I just jumped, came down and hit one of the holes on the field,’ ” said Swearinger. “There are a few holes in the grass, so he said he thought he stepped on one of those holes and got hurt. So I told him to try and walk it off, see if he could go. He went in the next play and couldn’t go, so I told him to go to the sideline and see what’s up with it. And he went over to the sideline, and I guess that’s when they told him (he had to stay out).’"

Nonetheless, it’s a crushing blow for one of the most popular young stars in the game as he tries to get his career on track.
