The Ray Rice story has gone all the way to the top.
The White House released a statement from press secretary Josh Earnest after Rice’s release from the Baltimore Ravens and his subsequent indefinite suspension:
"The President is the father of two daughters. And like any American, he believes that domestic violence is contemptible and unacceptable in a civilized society. Hitting a woman is not something a real man does and that’s true whether or not an act of violence happens in the public eye or, far too often, behind closed doors.Stopping domestic violence is something that’s bigger than football—and all of us have a responsibility to put a stop to it."

Some things to consider about domestic violence:
- According to the Centers for Disease Control, 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women.
- According to Safe Horizon, women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than men.
- Feminist.org says that women are most vulnerable to violence when separated from their intimate partner. The second-most vulnerable group is those who are divorced. That debunks the overly simplified idea that leaving solves the problem.
- Safe Horizon also reports that more than 3 million children per year witness domestic violence in their homes.
- The numbers are stark, according to Safe Horizon: One in four women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime.
- And finally, domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a year in law enforcement involvement, legal costs, medical and mental health treatment, and lost productivity at work.
