The Boston Red Sox have had a season to forget in 2014. As they look ahead to 2015, one thing they will hope for is good health for second baseman and franchise player Dustin Pedroia.

A smaller player who always hustles and plays a rugged brand of baseball, Pedroia has raised concern for some people that he will never be able to stay healthy. That might not be entirely fair, however; sometimes baseball things just happen.
That is the case with the lingering hand injury sustained by Pedroia; he hurt his left hand while being taken out on a double play attempt at second base. The Red Sox have been waiting to decide what to do to address that injury, and Ian Browne of MLB.com reports that surgery is the most likely course of action:
"While the Red Sox and Dustin Pedroia continue to do their due diligence on how to handle the second baseman’s injured left hand, surgery is all but inevitable.Look for an announcement in the coming days.“He and we are still gathering information,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “It’s moving towards probably a procedure, but nothing definitively scheduled right now.”"
Pedroia is batting .278/.337/.376 this season with seven home runs and 53 RBI in 135 games of action. In addition to this injury to his hand/thumb, Pedroia dealt with concussion-like symptoms earlier this season.
