It’s not surprising Roger Goodell doesn’t want to be seen.

More from NFL

He has a few things to worry about. The rice hit the fan and he’s busy picking it all up. So he won’t be attending a banquet for Panthers’ owner Jerry Richardson. My guess is that Richardson will forgive him for his absence. But for the Ray Rice scandal? That remains to be seen.

According to Michelle Boudin of WCNC in Charlotte, Goodell will not attend a banquet tonight where he was scheduled to present Richardson with a humanitarian award. Does anyone else’s eyes hurt from the glaring irony? No?

Amidst the unravelling of the NFL office’s credibly, Goodell was bestowed with the honor of giving an award from a group dedicated to “human dignity, justice and moral courage.” This is killing me.

Goodell’s decision not to make an appearance is a good thing. He’ll be a massive distraction at this event. Plus, his affairs are quite out of order. He’s got to deal with the tape that he says he never saw but the AP and the police say he did. Regardless of what he did or did not see, as Chris Mortenson said, it didn’t take much investigation to realize what happened in that elevator.

Goodell had a three and out when he punished Ray Rice this summer. Now he’s still throwing passes? Get him off the field.
