Sometimes teams sign players to scout out their opponents and get some insight into the inner workings of the other team’s franchise. It’s frowned upon but not illegal. If the Rams wanted to get some dirt on the Cowboys, all they’d need to do was sign Michael Sam to their roster for a week.

More from Dallas Cowboys

According to Ian Rapoport, the Rams can sign Sam, so long as they do it by Monday. If they don’t then they’ll have to wait a while.

It’s not a likely happening. This kind of move is done with some degree of stealth. The player they sign would generally have more familiarity of the Cowboys’ schemes. Most important, he’d have a lower profile. That way, the Rams would get caught red handed when they dump him a week later. If the Rams signed Sam for a week with the plans of dropping him, it would be the most media frenzied scouting intel they ever paid for.

Now, if only Roger Goodell could get them to do so — it might divert the storm of brown stuff that’s coming down on him.

And has anyone heard from Johnny Manziel recently? If the news cycle continues as it has, then we’ll be hearing from him soon.
