Boston Red Sox preparing to spend big this winter
By Ed Carroll
The Boston Red Sox have had a pretty abysmal year in 2014, after willing it all the previous season. Boston is dead last in the AL East, with a record of 63-83, had a mini-fire sale at the trade deadline, dealing pitchers John Lackey and Jon Lester in separate deals, and have been eliminated from postseason contention.

Hope you enjoyed the respite, American League. Boston doesn’t plan to be down for long. Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner said to expect the team to spend this winter.
The link has the full interview, but Werner specifically cites the 2012 trade between the Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, which saw pitcher Josh Beckett, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto, and $12 million dollars head to the West Coast, while first baseman James Loney (now with the Tampa Bay Rays) and four prospects headed to Boston.
That trade granted the Red Sox much-needed financial flexibility, which the Sox used to pick up outfielder Shane Victorino in free agency after the 2012 season, Cuban import Runsey Castillo last month, and now again this offseason.
Werner cautions the Red Sox don’t have limitless money (they aren’t the Dodgers or the Yankees, after all), but to expect the organization to spend to improve the team.
