Jonny Gomes on the state of the A’s: ‘It’s not ideal, but the boys are battling’
By Hayden Kane
It is officially time for the Oakland Athletics to bust out the sound bites. As they continue their precipitous fall in the American League standings and stare down the very real possibility of not reaching the 2014 postseason at all, the A’s are left to deal in cliches and canned quotations to pick themselves up and try to hold onto a wild card spot.

For a good quote, look no further than Jonny Gomes. A guy who is notorious for his strong presence and veteran leadership in the locker room, Gomes offered the usual talking points after the A’s lost on Friday and saw their wild card lead over the Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals shrink to just a half game.
From the San Francisco Chronicle, here is what Gomes had to say after the loss:
"“It’s not ideal, but the boys are battling. There are 15 games left and we’ve just got to do our best. … We’re in the driver’s seat. Season ends today, we’re in. We haven’t lost anything, by any means.”"
That’s all fine and good, but the Mariners still have head-to-head games against Oakland, starting when they continue their series against them this weekend. Seattle is just as much in the driver’s seat, with the chance to really make things uncomfortable for the A’s with Felix Hernandez scheduled to start on Saturday.
Oakland was historically dominant for much of the first half of the 2014 season. It seems impossible to believe that same team might miss the playoffs completely, but with the Los Angeles Angels running away with the American League West and the heat turned up in the wild card race, that is a distinct possibility.
