This is Horschel’s second straight win after he won the BMW Championship last week to propel himself to second in the FedEx Cup standings.
Horschel shot a 2-under 68 to finish at 11 under, three shots better than Rory McIlroy and Jim Furyk. It was Horschel’s 12th consecutive round in the 60s to finish the Playoffs.
In addition to his two wins, Horschel also tied for second at the Deutsche Bank Championship, his three-week run unprecedented in FedExCup Playoffs history.
Horschel had started the Playoffs ranked 69th in points to start the Playoffs. He dropped to 82nd after missing the cut at The Barclays but moved to 20th with his runner-up finish at TPC Boston before moving up to second behind Chris Kirk after last week’s win at Cherry Hills. He’s the first FedExCup winner to start the Playoffs outside the top 30 in points.
Horschel led Rory McIlroy by a stroke entering the final round, but McIlroy struggled in the middle of his round to drop off the pace. 2010 FedExCup winner Furyk became Horschel’s biggest challenger on the back nine, and even tied for the lead at one point.
But a 31-foot par putt by Horschel at the 16th hole sealed it for him, as he was able to maintain his one-shot lead. Horschel isn’t on the Ryder Cup team, since the captain’s picks were decided the day after the Deutsche Bank Championship. It’s too bad because in the last three weeks Horschel is -38 and Mahan, Bradley, Simpson are +15 combined. A 53-shot difference.
