College football thoughts and musings from noon kickoffs September 13th

It was certainly an interesting afternoon! Let’s dive right in!

More from College Football Odds

Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk only completed 14 passes. Four of them went for touchdowns in the rout of Central Florida.

Shane Carden is the best quarterback you have never heard of. Now maybe some people will notice since he went into Blacksburg and threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter. He became the first quarterback to throw for over 400 yards against Virginia Tech since 2002. Not long enough ago? How about this: Carden led East Carolina to a win in Blacksburg for the first time since 1991. And yes, they do play every year.

One of these games, Georgia Southern will get over the hump. Today, Georgia Tech scored with 23 seconds left to win the game after blowing a 21 point first half lead.

Same thing goes for UMass. At some point, something has to go their way, right? The Minutemen gave up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to drop a game against Vanderbilt that they were in control of for three quarters. It looks like Vanderbilt it going back to Patton Robbinette at quarterback, and why not? They got more of a spark from him than anyone else.

Ugh! How in the world did Pittsburgh give up 25 points to Florida International??

West Virginia and Maryland gave us one of the most entertaining games of the day. It sure didn’t start that way. The Mountaineers looked like they were going to run off with it. Then Maryland stormed back behind the play of C.J. Brown. That said, you won’t win many, if any, games if you allow the opposing team to throw for 511 yards.

More boo-boos for the Big 10(14). Indiana gave one up to a Bowling Green team that was rolled by Western Kentucky. Iowa State, who lost to 1-AA North Dakota State, beat Iowa in Iowa City. Keep in mind, Iowa State had not forced a turnover in two games until they got to face Jake Rudock. And the timeout….oh…..the timeout. The ridiculous practice of “icing the kicker” didn’t work for Iowa. Then again, when you have a 14-3 halftime lead against a team that was scoreless in the second half on the season, you should win the game.

Hey, at least Ohio State looked good. Really good in fact.

This might be the worst team Ohio has had in the Frank Solich era.

Virginia’s defense is about as good as you will find. Not only did they handcuff a potent UCLA team, they found a way to get a win against the second ranked school they have faced in three weeks. This was Virginia’s first win against at ranked team since they beat Florida State in 2011.

Well, Wyoming did lead Oregon 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. That has to count for something, right?
