The Pirates entered play on Sunday afternoon with a 1.5 game lead on the Milwaukee Brewers for the second Wild Card spot in the National League. That added an extra element of intensity to Pittsburgh’s game against the Chicago Cubs, lending extra importance to each key play made on either side.
The context alone was enough to add some drama to the game. As if that wasn’t enough, the Pirates turned an old-fashioned triple play on Sunday to thrill the home crowd in Pittsburgh. This was the most exciting of a number of good moments as the Pirates went on to defeat the Cubs by a final score of 7-3.
It was the first triple play ever turned at PNC Park. The Pirates now turn their attention to a home series against the Boston Red Sox this week before hosting the Milwaukee Brewers in a key series next weekend.
