The St. Louis Cardinals are surging toward a second straight National League Central title and a fourth straight playoff berth, but first baseman Matt Adams is out of the lineup Sunday because of a lingering oblique injury.
According to Stan McNeal of Fox Sports Midwest, via Twitter:
Adams indeed dealing with tightness in oblique again, Matheny says. Descalso gets the start at 1B Sunday. #stlcards

Adams has been dealing with the injury for several weeks and it’s affecting him at the plate. He was hitting .311/.330/.491 after a 3-for-5 day against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 18.
Since then, Adams is hitting only .167/.264/.321 in his last 23 games, with 23 strikeouts.
For the season, Adams is at .288/.319/.464 in 132 games, with 31 doubles, five triples (yes, five triples), 15 homers and 64 RBI.
Adams is in his second full season and started all of St. Louis’ postseason games last October, hitting .222/.269/.319 with a homer and four RBI.
He’s been in the cleanup spot most of the season for the Cardinals, who moved into first place in the division by themselves on Sept. 1, moving past the freefalling Milwaukee Brewers.
St. Louis came into Sunday with a 3½-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates with 13 games to play.
Daniel Descalso got the start at first base against the Colorado Rockies.
