The Baltimore Orioles tightened their stranglehold on the AL East with another thrilling victory over the New York Yankees. The Orioles have their biggest lead on the division in a long time and it only seems to be growing as the team continues on a course for the AL playoffs.

More from Baltimore Orioles

Kelly Johnson was the hero on this night as his walk-off double gave the Orioles a comeback 3-2 victory over New York, who entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead.

First, note those slick Orioles jerseys. We don’t know where they came from, but we love them. Then notice the booming shot to the outfield wall that prompted the Yankees outfielders to pull up before they could even get to the ball, knowing the game was over. These aren’t your grandma’s Orioles, it would seem.

Sunday’s win cut the magic number for the Orioles to clinch the AL East to three. Any combination of Baltimore’s wins and losses from the Toronto Blue Jays that add up to three will secure the division for Baltimore for the first time since 1997.

Additionally, this is the first time in 17 years that the Orioles have won the season series against the Yankees. Baltimore is 11-4 against New York this year. There’s still no word yet on whether the rest of the world has been turned upside down.
