That means Kirk Cousins will once again be the starting quarterback for Washington as not a season of his career has gone by where he hasn’t gotten starts in place of RGIII. But while he’s a great backup, Jay Gruden apparently wanted more out of him when he arrived this offseason.
According to the Washington Post, Jay Gruden has preferred Kirk Cousins to Robert Griffin III ever since he came to Washington but had no way to make the switch nicely.
"The dirty little secret in Ashburn is that Coach Jay Gruden actually thought Kirk Cousins was better suited to his offense, that Robert Griffin III wasn’t getting it and there was no way to delicately make a change at any point this season without causing major problems throughout the organization. So the new coach was resigned to doing everything he could to develop Griffin into a pocket passer, though he really feared Griffin might not be the guy to lead the team over the long term."
Robert Griffin III was drafted after a hefty ransom was paid by the Redskins to acquire the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. That’s a price that makes it hard to just shelve Griffin without a good reason — and Gruden got that good reason on Sunday.
