Klay Thompson rumors: Thompson seeking the max from Golden State Warriors?

Now that Golden State Warriors’ guard Klay Thompson was not traded for Minnesota Timberwolves’ power forward Kevin Love and is back from the FIBA World Cup, he is seeking an extension from the Warriors and will likely be asking for the max.

Thompson’s agent Bill Duffy believes he is one of the top two-way players in the game.

“I don’t want (Los Angeles Lakers star) Kobe Bryant to go crazy, but there’s some uncertainty as to who he is right now (because of injuries that limited him to six games last season),” Duffy told USA TODAY Sports. “But I think Klay Thompson right now is the top two-way, two-guard in basketball. I think when you look at his body of work, when you look at what he accomplished guarding point guards on a regular basis (last season), I think it’s pretty clear.”

If the Warriors don’t offer Thompson the max, someone likely will once he hits restricted free agency. The Warriors could then opt to match that deal, which would be a four-year deal rather than the five-year they could offer if they signed him outright.

Thompson averaged 18.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 79.5% from the charity stripe last season. In the postseason, he put up 16.4 points, 3.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 40.8% from the field, 36.4% from three and 79.2% from the free throw line. In his three-year career, the 11th-overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft, has gone for 16.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor, 41.0% from three and 82.7% from the charity stripe.
