NFL Overreactions Week 2: Jets one-up the Giants choke
RG III breaks own ankle to give Cousins playing time; Cousins out to trademark “KC8”
In what seemed like a risky move to help a better teammate out, and help the team win, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III broke his own ankle in Washington’s 41-10 win over Jacksonville on Sunday. On a rollout to the right, Griffin realized that he doesn’t like getting hit, and decided to help everyone’s cause by trying to juke out of bounds so hard, he broke his own ankle. Backup Kirk Cousins went in to show everyone what a good quarterback looks like, throwing for 250 yards in the win.
It looked gruesome and it will sideline RG III again indefinitely, however Redskins’ head coach Jay Gruden confirmed that he suffered a dislocated ankle in the first quarter against the Jaguars on Sunday. Griffin is less than two years removed from reconstructive knee surgery and struggled to recover last year. (He actually struggled overall, but you get the idea.)
Griffin completed two of his first three passes and ran for another 22 yards prior to the injury. Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins came in and got the job done, leading the ‘Skins to their first 40-plus point game since 2012.
He threw a touchdown to fullback Darrel Young shortly after relieving Griffin in the first. He completed his first 12 passes including the touchdown pass to Young. The Redskins outgained the Jags 449-148 on the day, while Cousins went 22-for-33 for 250 yards with two touchdowns, moving up to 1-1 on the young season.
