In a competitive NFC West, teams can’t afford to not be at their best any given week. Unfortunately for the Arizona Cardinals, it could be a month before they are at their best. According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, quarterback Carson Palmer could be out for an extended period of time as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

Palmer didn’t play in Week 2’s 25-14 win against the New York Giants after being listed as questionable with nerve problem in his shoulder. Drew Stanton started in his place, completing 14-of-29 passes for 167 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions, though he was sacked four times as he struggled to get the ball away quickly.

In the first game of the season, the Cardinals beat the San Diego Chargers 18-17.  Palmer led the attack, completing 24-of-37 passes for 304 yards, two touchdowns and no picks.

Prior to his start in Week 2, Stanton had not thrown a regular-season pass since he was with the Detroit Lions in 2010. While he played well enough for the Cardinals to win this past weekend, it was merely against a Giants team that looks to be one of the worst in the league early on.

The Cardinals had playoff hopes before the season, and will need Palmer back to compete in a tough NFC.
