For the second time this season, Arrieta had his hopes for a no-no broken up in the eighth inning. It says a lot that Arrieta has been dominant to the point that he has had a real chance at two no-hitters this season, but one imagines that he feels pretty sick about getting so close only to surrender a hit late once again.
This time it was Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips who broke things up. By all accounts and all reasonable measures, Phillips is having a horrible season (.258/.301/.362), but that didn’t stop him from admiring his work and even flipping his bat when he knocked a double to break up the no-no.
You just keep doing you, I guess, Brandon Phillips. As for Arrieta, he will continue to enjoy his status as one of the rising stars in the National League.
